Urban Imaginary – hopes for the future of municipalities

Selected by Deirdre Logue:
“The Urban Imaginary is a place located somewhere between the conscious and the unconscious mind, where the surreal and the dreamlike work to interrupt our daily urban routine. The films and videos selected for exhibition in the Urban Imaginary category rely less on traditional narratives and more on our ability to see past the obvious, asking us to embrace a fragmented and hopeful place of possibility.”

Urban Natural – the living city, both nurtured and oppressed

Selected by Brenda Longfellow:
"In our new age of environmentalism, the city takes on a whole different complexion: as a carbon intensive nightmare of car culture and smog days, paradise paved over to put up a parking lot. These films about nature in the city sing a whole different tune about the whole buzzing, rooting, fecund persistence of the natural world springing to unlikely life between the cracks in the pavement, about humans imitating nature, and about gardens blooming in the most unlikely of places.”

Urban Travels - from taking public transit to practicing Parkour

Selected by Robert Ouellette:
“The entries in the travel category illustrate that traveling does not necessarily mean leaving your city, or even your neighborhood. Travel is the adventure we all engage in when moving from one place to another—even going to work or visiting your favourite Toronto park. The creative amongst us are able to turn those conventional, even predictable experiences into a film minute that are adventures in their own right. Enjoy them.”
