Genie Award Winning and Academy Award Nominated Deepa Mehta announced as the 2010 Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) Guest Judge
Toronto, Ontario [May 4, 2010] -- Deepa Mehta, whose dazzling film trilogy, Fire, Earth, Water, captivated audiences worldwide will be this year's Guest Judge for the Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) airing on Onestop's network of digital displays in the Toronto Transit System in September. Mehta will choose the Top 3 films of the 2010 festival as well as the winners of the WIFT-T Award for Most Ambitious Film by a Female Director, and the Naish McHugh Award for Emerging Filmmakers, a $2,500 cash award from the City of Toronto. After TUFF, Mehta heads into production on Midnight's Children based on the novel by Salman Rushdie. Deepa Mehta joins a prestigious list of actors and filmmakers who have served as TUFF Guest Judges, including Don McKellar (2009) and Mark McKinney (2008). Since its launch in 2007, the festival has grown in both size and stature, currently featuring 65 ultra-short films and over $10,000 in cash and in-kind awards.
TUFF is the only "˜underground' award winning film festival of its kind in North America, reaching an audience of over 1 million daily commuters on Onestop's TTC network of digital screens on subway platforms. TUFF features seven different urban-themed categories of one-minute silent films, running every 10 minutes during Toronto's festival fever September 10 - 19, 2010. This year, TUFF will include more specially designated screening areas called "TUFF Film Zones" at Dundas, Queen, Union and the Yonge/Bloor stations, where the festival will screen nonstop for 10 days.
