Comment Film Info & Credits
Jump! is a silent animation. The image was been taken from the iconic black and white Cold War photo of Conrad Schumann jumping the wall in East Berlin on August 15th 1961. A skipping rope has been added to the image via animation. Conrad Schumann was a young 19 year old border guard on the East side of Berlin. He sensed that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Citizens on the West side of Berlin picked up on his anxiety and encouraged him to Komm Ruber (come over) to the West side. After finishing his cigarette he seized the opportunity and jumped the wall - at that time only a barbed-wire fence. The photographer Peter Leibing was there to capture his bold move towards freedom, Schumann succeeded in making the jump. When the wall fell in 1989 he returned to the former DDR. Schumann was so distraught and guilt-ridden by the stories told by friends and family of life under Communist/Stasi rule he chose to end his life.
